welcome to the little house in italy
Cittą Sant' Angelo is positioned on a hill facing the Adriatic Sea, not far from Pescara. It overlooks the Saline river valley. The town takes its name from Angulus, a centre inhabited by the Italic Vestini people. Cittą Sant'Angelo is a town of important historic interest with Roman ruins and baroque buildings. The old town centre sprawls over the top of the hill and houses several fine medieval churches, including the Collegiate Church of San Michele (13th century), with its 14th century sculpted Gothic entrance. An elegant 15th century portico runs along the side of the church and contains two walled-in marble pluteuses with interlinked crosses. Archaeological finds and sacred statues may be admired in the Civic Museum. An area of the Fino river valley was recently made into a reserve to protect the fragile local ecosystem. During the summer months there are classical music concerts in the main piazza.

The coastline of Abruzzo is varied, where the low and sandy shores to the north contrast with the inclined shores to the south. The sette sorelle (seven sisters), seven seaside resorts in the province of Teramo, from Martinsicuro to Silvi, the Pescara and the Francavilla al Mare beaches, offer high level accomodation, night-clubs, and in Pescara itself, even a modern marina. To the south the scenery changes radically: from Ortona to Vasto and as far as S. Salvo, sloping shores surrounded by the rich Mediterranean vegetation appear on the coastline. They too, are well equipped for a pleasant holiday. The nostalgic fishing past emerges between S. Vito and Fossacesia, where the travocchi, singular fishing huts built on piles, are still today used by the local fishermen.
Skiing in Abruzzo
There are 21 ski areas in the region forming a total of 368km of pistes. All are easily reachable by car from Citta Sant Angelo in just over an hour. The best skiing is from January till April with Roccaraso being the premier resort, approximately sixty miles from the house.
The region also has a well organized cross country skiing tradition and a special guide can be requested from the tourism offices.
The pistes range from 1650m to 2140m in altitude and are comparable with many Alpine resorts and often have more snow than the Alps. They combine to form 60 km of runs. The origins of Roccaraso date from the the 12th century when it was called 'Rocca del Raso' and was part of the fiefdom of the Count of Sangro.
